Samarkand International University of Technology hosted high-level negotiations with representatives of one of China’s largest energy corporations — China Datang Overseas Investment.
The delegation included Mr. Teng Yi Peng, Director of the company’s Central Asia Office, and Mr. Cai Minghui, Director of the Datang Uzbekistan Innovation Center. The visit was part of a strategic initiative to advance joint projects in science, education, and energy technologies.
China Datang is one of the key players in China’s energy sector and a member of the country’s “Big Five” power generation companies. Among its partners in Uzbekistan is the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In the past two years, this partnership has resulted in the establishment of the Silk Road Energy Joint Innovation Center, through which two training programs have already been held — in Tashkent and Chengdu (PRC) — for 50 Uzbek specialists.
During the visit to SIUT, the Chinese delegation became closely acquainted with the university’s academic and research potential, infrastructure, and strategic focus on engineering education. Key topics of discussion included the launch of joint dual-degree programs, student internships at China Datang’s industrial clusters, language preparation, participation in international energy projects, and the possibility of targeted scholarships in fields such as Electric Power Engineering (CIEP), Renewable Energy (KITC), International Logistics, and more.
“Human capital development is a cornerstone of all international energy projects. Only highly qualified specialists can ensure technological breakthroughs and the successful implementation of complex initiatives,” noted Mr. Cai Minghui, emphasizing the importance of professional education in the global energy cooperation framework.
In turn, Mr. Teng Yi Peng, Director of the Central Asia Office of China Datang, expressed strong support for developing long-term academic ties with SIUT. He also pledged assistance in creating internship pathways for SIUT students and building a platform for their professional growth.
In 2025, joint research projects between China and Uzbekistan will focus on critical areas such as renewable energy and modern agriculture. A total of 30 projects are expected to be supported with a combined budget of 30 million yuan. SIUT has expressed readiness to actively promote project proposals and ensure a high level of academic cooperation, including joint conferences and faculty exchange programs.
CIEP students visited the Jilin branch of China Datang Corporation as part of their participation in the Summer Student Camp at Northeast Electric Power University (Jilin, PRC, August–September 2024).
SIUT Provost Professor Bobby Hall underscored the significance of the visit:
“We see this partnership not merely as an academic exchange, but as a pathway to integrating education, research, and industry at a cross-regional level.”
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties announced their intention to proceed with the next phase of cooperation — the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), scheduled for August 2025, to coincide with the official opening of China Datang’s new office building in Uzbekistan.
